Natural Stress Management Caution
Before taking any herbal remedies by mouth you should always ensure that you do not have any contraindications for taking them.
For example you should not use herbal preparations with lavender if you have low blood pressure. Chamomile on the other hand should not be taken by persons taking prescription medications for high blood pressure.
Herbal remedies with lavender should also be avoided by those taking barbiturates like phenobarbital (Donnatal), amobarbital (Amytal), pentobarbital (Luminal) and secobarbital (Seconal) because of the risk of developing excessive drowsiness.
Persons taking sedatives or medications to help them sleep like zolpidem (Ambien) should also steer clear from using preparations with lavender or chamomile because these herbs are also used to treat insomnia.
Persons operating machinery or driving should also avoid using these two herbs for the same reason. Those taking alcohol should also abstain from them.
Women who are pregnant should not use herbal remedies with chamomile since it can cause miscarriages.
Patients taking blood thinners like warfarin (coumadin), clopidogrel (plavix) and aspirin should avoid using chamomile since it may cause bleeding. It should also not be used for a period of two weeks before any surgical or dental procedure because of this risk of increased bleeding.
Finally, persons who are allergic to daisy or aster family plants like ragweed and chrysanthemums should avoid herbal remedies with chamomile.
