Natural Depression Treatment Caution
Before taking any herbal remedies by mouth you should always ensure that you do not have any contraindications for taking them. For example you should not take herbal remedies with rosemary if you are taking blood thinners like warfarin (coumadin), clopidogrel (plavix) and even aspirin since it may cause bleeding.
If you are taking high blood pressure medications known as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors which include captopril, enalapril and lisinopril you should also avoid rosemary.
If you are taking prescription medications to treat depression from your doctor you should not take herbal remedies with St. John’s wort since this can cause a dangerous reaction known as the serotonin syndrome.
Those antidepressants medications which should not be taken together with St John’s wort include serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil) and sertraline (Zoloft).
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) like amitriptyline (Elavil) and imipramine (Tofranil) should also not be taken together with St. John’s wort.
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) like phenelzine (Nardil) and tranylcypromine (Parnate) are other antidepressants which should not be combined with St. John’s wort.
If you take digoxin for heart conditions like congestive heart failure you should also not take herbal remedies with St. John’s wort.
